Shady Plants - Mail Order shade plant Nursery

Please note that deciduous ferns and plants lose their fronds and leaves from autumn through to spring. This is entirely natural and, indeed, desireable as the plants perform better after the winter rest. Rest assured that all deciduous plants are thouroughly checked before dispatch to ensure healthy and vigorous roots and crowns.

To keep privacy information to a minimum we do not have an account system. You will be notified by your preffered carrier on delivery status and should be given a delivery window. If you require and information on your order, including tracking information, then contact us and we will send the information by return. Unlike many other plant nurseries, our speciality has always been mail order (over 15 years now....time flies!) so we know how to get plants to you on great shape! Indeed, even during the long delays during peak covid we had many complements of how our plants arrived after two to three weeks in the delivery system. Our packing method ensures a good, moist root system for rapid establishment. Our plants do not dry out in transit, of course we send them out a little drier during autumn for obvious reasons.

We work hard to get your plants to you as soon as we can and usually dispatch plants the next working day after ordering. Orders are sent out from the nursery Monday to Thursday.
Contactless payment Click and Collect is now available, just select "collection from nursery" from the delivery drop down menu in the basket.

A short note on delivery costs. Our aim is to get the plants to you on great shape. We use recyled packaging materials where we can, but only if they help achieve the main aim, so you may get a mixture of bulking materials to stop pot movement in transit. Unfortunately delivery and packaging costs have increased substantially in the last few months. We have had to increase the delivery a price a little, as well as the threshold for free delivery. However we have absorbed most of the increased costs and, as we always have, charge a lot less for delivery and packaging than we are charged.

Unlike many other mail order nurseries, all of our ferns are posted in their containers. This ensures the ferns reach you in great condition as the root systems are well protected (many ferns dislike root disturbance). It also means they can be purchased and planted at anytime of the year when the ground conditions are suitable (not waterlogged or frozen).

Please note that a telephone number is required for the couriers.
Plant pot sizes for ferns are generally 9cm round pots, around 360ml capacity. This size establishes quickly and also has the benefit of being able to be planted in bulb planter holes! Depending on availability we may also send out P9's (9cm square pots). Ferns in the collections are also generally in 9cm rounds though I do like to use the P9's if available, except for living wall collections. Flowering plants are generally in P9's, excepting some dwarf varieties. P9's are 9cm square pot with a capacity of 0.5 litre.

Plug plants- small and great value, a good way to build a collection if you can give them that extra care and attention. These need to be potted up for general garden use. They can be used in living walls but care is needed when watering as due to the smaller root size they are more prone to drying out. You can find out more information here:

Jumbo plugs- as the name suggests these are larger than normal plugs and equivalent to a 4cm pot. Our Hosta plugs tend to be this side and should be potted into a 9cm pot, growth will be good and relatively quick.

9cm pots- Generally starter ferns, easy to plant out and maintain due to smaller pot size and less foliage so transpiration is reduced. Our ferns are in two forms of 9cm pot: 9cm round with a volume of approx. third of a litre; and P9's, a square pot with a volume of half a litre. Growth rate once planted are similar.

10/12cm- Perfect for an instant effect, generally more foliage than 9cm plants so will need a little extra watering until established.

1 litre Generally much fuller plants, perfect for containers..

2 litre pots- we supply certain plants in this pot size, generally large and great looking! These are only available to Irish and Northern Irish customers.
